A worn chain causes wear on all multi and single speed drive chains, which includes chain rings, or front sprockets, rear gears, freewheels or cassettes, and even jockey wheels will wear, so it's best to keep it up to date. Damage of the rear mech is the most probable cause of rear changing issues, especially the newer 12 speeds.

CHAIN SERVICE / REPAIRS / FITTING
A chain free of sticking or damaged links is very important, and so is a chain fitted to the correct length for the smooth operation of the drive train. A chain incorrectly fitted or one that has stretched can run on the rear derailleur causing wear and noise, which is not what we want for our gear or on our rides.
